After completing (or failing) the quest Sage Advice, the player will receive a miscellaneous objective to check in with Valerine.
When they ask her about more Emissary work, she will start this quest.
Valerine will tell the player of a conspiracy brewing, and a magically sealed letter that might help them thwart it. The player will be tasked with pretending to be a messenger, delivering a letter to a camp of the conspirators, and learn how they unseal it.
If the player had successfully recruited Tanhana during the quest Roadside Chatter, they'll be given an optional objective to speak to her to get more insight into the conspirators, and Valerine will tell them of a specific book they could use to pay Tanhana with for the information - though the player would need to acquire it on their own.
If the player pursues the optional objective with Tanhana, she can be paid with the book, 250 gold, or Persuaded to give the information for free. She'll explain that their leader spoke a lot of theatres and festivals - a hint that Dramatic will be the most effective tone.
As the player approaches, the leader will address the player with a warning and the guards will perk up as well.
After the first Emissary choice, the player will be told to sit down in a chair in the camp.
Once seated, the game continues. The leader will continue questioning the player, and in the background, a mage will begin performing the ritual to unseal the letter.
After the fourth question, if the leader doesn't trust the player, they will abandon the ritual and not unseal it. Otherwise the player will be given a final question.
After the last question, the leader will evaluate whether they trust the player once more. If they are unsure, the player will be given a chance to Persuade or Intimidate their way to success.
If the player was successful, they will be handed a new sealed letter and set free. They will be given the objective to attack the conspirators, who won't know what's going to happen so the player can setup and get a first strike from a distance if they like.
If the player failed, they will be attacked immediately.
Once combat starts, guards sent by Valerine will run in from a short distance and help the fight.
After the battle is over, the player will be given the objective to collect the letter from the mage's corpse; this will be unsealed if the player made it through the entire conversation without arousing too much suspicion.
Once the player has the letter, they'll be given the objective to return to Valerine.
If the player was successful and was handed the new sealed note, they'll receive a reward of 1500 gold; if they made it to the Persuade/Intimidate check but failed, they'll receive a reward of 750 gold, as it means they stalled enough for the mage to have unsealed the first letter; and the player will receive nothing for failure.
The player then receives a bonus 500 gold if they were handed the additional sealed note from the leader.
The next mission will become available a short while after this is finished. The player will be prompted with a miscellaneous objective to remind them to speak to Valerine again.
